FLUTE LESSONS

My flute lessons include instruction on tone development, scales, technique, sight-reading, ensemble readiness (by playing duets and piano accompaniments with my students) and musical interpretation through the studying flute solo literature. I select flute literature for each student that matches their abilities and challenges them in aspects that they need to improve.

Taking private music lessons is a great way to learn an instrument well. Sometimes students take several years of beginning band first and then continue with private lessons in order to play better. I have many success stories of students who have come to me unable to progress much further because of improper technique or lack of direction, but through private lessons have learned how to play with ease and have excelled in all aspects of playing flute.

It is advantageous to take private music lessons from the start. These students usually have quick success because there are no bad habits to correct. I have taught students ranging from seven years old to seventy years old. My student's abilities range from beginners to seasoned musicians who regularly perform in concert, but want to improve their playing through coaching without having to go back for another college degree.

Buying a Student Model Flute

Respected brand name student model flutes include: Gemeinhart, Jupiter, Yamaha, Artley, and Emerson. If you are not sure if you have a good brand name, it is best to check with a teacher or have someone you trust and ask them to look at and play the instrument for you before buying it. Avoid no-name models and cheap Chinese-made flutes because they generally do not play in tune. These can break easily and are not repairable. Also, be careful when buying used beginner models. If the pads underneath the keys are not sealing properly, the flute will not play well and the cost of pad replacement can make the good deal you found not such a good deal anymore by costing sometimes an addition $100-200 more. If you choose to buy a used instrument, I recommend that you first get a reliable opinion and/or appraisal from a local music repair person before purchasing.

Buying a Semi-Professional or Professional Model Flute

Be sure to play on the flute you actually buy. Because these upper end flutes have many unique features and are partly or all hand crafted, semi-professional and professional flutes are all unique and thus sound and play slightly different from one another.
